A GROUP of secondary school students had a wonderful time recently with drama - learning how to put on a play and how to act on stage. They were taking part in one of the offerings of the International Children's Arts Festival 1994.

The play, A Voyage to Jichu River , is a production of the Youth Theatre, under the Sha Tin Theatre Company, and was performed last week at the Sha Tin Town Hall.

The play tells the story of Wah, 17, who travels to the birthplace of his late father to look for the missing part of a kung fu instructions manual, and also to try and solve a riddle he found in his father's diary.

Poon Wai-sum, who shared in the script-writing, explained the message behind the play.

''It's about young people rebelling against their fathers. The father is the main authority figure when we are growing up,'' Mr Poon said.

''Most of us resist the rules our parents impose on us, without understanding the reason for their strictness. Our story is about a son who finally realises how much his father loves him, but only after a long journey of discovery.'' Sam Wong Cham-sum, one of the actors, said he was happy he did not give up half way during the rigorous training sessions.
