A MAN convicted of taking part in a security van robbery and stealing $167 million in cash has argued he should be acquitted as the identification evidence against him is poor.

Through his counsel John Griffith QC, Cheung Tse-keung, on appeal, suggested the commander of the security van might have a motive for deliberately misidentifying him.

Cheung, 42, had been sentenced to 18 years by Deputy High Court Judge Sharwood after a jury found him guilty of robbery but acquitted his common law wife, Law Yim-fong, on the joint charge.

The Appeal Court, heard that US$17 million and HK$35 million was collected from the strongroom of Guardforce on July 12, 1991.

On arrival at the airport cargo terminal, three men jumped on board and took the van to Kwun Tong Road, where the money was transferred to a getaway van.

It was the Crown's case that Law, who was at the time working in the Guardforce control room, was one of the three people who had access to information relating to the shipment.
