A MAN jailed for a $167 million security van robbery had his conviction quashed yesterday.

The Court of Appeal ruled that the conviction of Cheung Tsz-keung could not stand because the trial judge had misdirected the jury on identification.

The Appeal Court felt it was a proper case for a retrial.

Cheung, however, failed to persuade the court to overturn his conviction for trying to bribe a policeman.

But as he had already completed the three-year jail term imposed for the charge, the court granted bail, pending retrial for robbery, in the sum of $500,000 and a surety of $250,000.

Cheung, 42, had been found guilty in December 1992 after a trial before Deputy High Court Judge Sharwood, who sentenced him to 18 years' jail for the holdup.
