SOUTH Korea's Hanjin Shipping Co will begin a trans-Atlantic service between North Europe and the US east coast on January 1.

  Instead of using its own vessels, Hanjin has entered into a slot charter agreement with Tricon Lines to link up with its existing pendulum service operating in the Far East-Europe and Far East-US trades.

  Tricon is a joint service operated by DSR-Senator Lines and Cho Yang.

  Hanjin will initially market 300 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) on the trans-Atlantic leg of Tricon ships.

  Hanjin has also applied for membership of the Trans-Atlantic Agreement (TAA) and expects to be part of the service contract negotiations which will take place later this year.

  Hanjin's application to join TAA surprised many shipping observers who believed the company would maintain its independent role on all but one of its existing long-haul routes.

  A company spokeswoman said that by making use of the existing available capacity in the trade, rather than deploying its own vessels, Hanjin would be making a major contribution to the stability of the trade as well as extend its service capabilities and shippers' choice.

  Meanwhile, Hanjin has started a new Intra-Asia Express Service linking Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore by deploying three container ships of 1,200 TEUs capacity each.

  The spokeswoman said the express service will reduce the transit time from Singapore to the US by two days.

  Transit time between ports in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore will also be cut by one to two days.

  The company has also expanded its Round the Asia Service with additional calls at Inchon in South Korea and Surabaya in Indonesia.

  Hanjin currently operates a fleet of 35 container ships totalling 1.373 million tonnes and 22 bulk carriers aggregating 2.561 million.
