LAM Hung-fie had a vintage year last season and he must already be looking forward to a future winner, given the way his debutant, Winning Sammy, shaped yesterday. The son of Straight Strike had been very green in his work and missed the start in his trials. He did the same yesterday when losing a good four or five lengths in the race won so promisingly by David Oughton's close-season acquisition, Congratulations. After they had gone through the first quarter in this 1,000-metre dash down the home stretch, Winning Sammy must have been a good 10 lengths off the lead. But he then found his feet and simply flashed home in the style of a horse which had future winner written all over it. He still has something to learn about the game but he does look worth a wager when pushed up to around 1,400 metres. Congratulations, by the way, looks destined for a win in Class Three, let alone another crack at Class Four. He is another who will appreciate being pushed up to tackle 1,400 metres or even farther. Talking of horses flashing home from last, there was an almost unbelievable effort from Ivan Allan's Insider in the fourth. He was badly outpaced and must have stood them up 30 lengths or more yet still managed to thread his way through to finish just off the placegetters. And keep a close watch out for Wong Tang-ping's Cutlass Perfection the next time he runs.
