THE brief pastoral visit to our midst of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, alerted Keeping Posted to the fact that any mention of the words 'crossing over' in Anglican circles these days is bound to raise alarm.

For the benefit of those of other religious persuasions we should explain that the current trend of Anglicans converting to Catholicism in protest at the Church of England's decision to ordain women priests is known as 'crossing the Tiber' - after the river that dissects Rome.

At a cocktail party the night before Dr Carey preached at St John's Cathedral we heard a number of our C of E friends talking about 'crossing over on Sunday'. Naturally, anxious eyebrows were raised.

However, discreet inquiries revealed that they were part of Dr Carey's flock who lived on Kowloon side.

And they were merely referring to the far from hostile business of 'crossing the harbour' to receive the pearls of wisdom that the Archbishop was casting from the pulpit.
