Back on top . . . Hong Kong has regained its status as the world's busiest port, forcing Singapore back into second place. In May the territory became the first port in the world to handle more than 900,000 containers in a calendar month. Figures released by the Port Development Board (PDB) show the territory's container throughput totalled 985,000 TEUs (20 ft equivalent units) in May, up 26.8 per cent over the same month last year. The PDB attributed the growth to increased demand from the booming economy in southern China.
