NINETEEN members of the Tai Po Sam Yuk Secondary School's Pathfinder Club joined other Pathfinders from across the world for the 1994 Dare to Care International Pathfinder Camporee held near Denver in the United States.
The camporee, hosted by the Rocky Mountain Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, was attended by 10,000 Pathfinders, aged 10 to 18, and more than 1,000 volunteers.
'Attending a camporee is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a young person,' said the Tai Po Sam Yuk School club director.
'It is a chance to grow physically, emotionally and spiritually,' he said. It was truly a great opportunity for me to learn new things! The 10,000 Pathfinders hailed from 47 states in the US and Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Guam, Guatemala, Paraguay, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Ukraine, Estonia and, of course, Hong Kong.
Since we travelled the furthest, about 11,888 kilometres, the people were especially warm to us. During these 16 days, I was exposed to different cultures, languages, faces and habits.
We gave two performances. One was dancing and the other was a match drilling show. Although, in my opinion, those performances were not that good, almost everyone who met us said, 'Good job!'.
I found this great difference between the Chinese and the Americans. The Americans like to encourage others.
