SQUASH players selected for the Asian Junior Championships to be held in the territory next January will face the toughest training programme ever for a Hong Kong team.

Tony Choi Yuk-kwan, the Hong Kong Squash Racquets Association's director of coaching, issued the warning after his appointment as assistant national coach last week.

Choi said: 'We will be picking six boys and six girls for training starting in early October and we will be doing a lot of gym work to build up their muscles.

'Our kids are just not muscular enough to endure the physical contact in the sport and we must need to improve on their physique.' The Hong Kong team members would have to undergo at least two tough gym sessions a week, but the training programme would be tailor-made for each individual.

'Let's take Jackie Lee and Wong Wai-hang as examples. Jackie is not muscular enough so we want him to do more weight training, whereas Wai-hang is strong but his racquet skill is not very good, so he will be given individual coaching to improve on his strokes,' Choi said.
