AIR cargo throughput at Kai Tak airport continued along a steady growth curve, recording a 12.7 per cent increase for August, according to statistics released yesterday by Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (HACTL).
Last month, HACTL handled a total of 107,542 tonnes of air cargo, which represented a small decrease compared with July's figure of a total of 110,400 tonnes.
However, the August figure was still the second highest monthly total recorded for the year.
'Growth has continued very steadily throughout the summer and this is an encouraging sign for the next three months,' said HACTL managing director Anthony Charter.
He said this was always the busiest time of the year because many Christmas goods moved in and out of Hong Kong.
According to HACTL's figures, transshipment cargo continued to be the most significant growth area, with the August throughput of 13,504 tonnes representing an increase of 35.6 per cent over the same month a year ago.
