ANOTHER $14 million is to be spent on renovation to enable Stanley Fort to house a rehabilitation centre for the disabled.

This is on top of the $8 million being spent on Stanley's married quarters to spruce them up for private rental.

The $14 million is to be spent on the single men's dormitories at the former British Army base to accommodate a temporary move there by the Aberdeen Rehabilitation Centre, sources said.

The money is understood to be needed to address creeping damp, leaking roofs, shoddy paint work and missing tiles.

The 20-year-old centre for the disabled in Welfare Road, Wong Chuk Hang, is soon to be demolished and rebuilt. It has a capacity for 172 residential places and 132 day-care places, providing care and rehabilitation for disabled people over 16 who cannot work.

Some British Garrison members were angry when the South China Morning Post revealed a month ago that $8 million was to be spent on Stanley's married quarters.
