The St Margaret's Church in Broadwood Road was burgled on September 25, although a staff member said the case was not reported because it was 'no big deal'.
But they alerted police yesterday after discovering between $4,000 and $6,000 had been stolen from donation boxes.
A church staff member said no one watched the church at night.
Police suspect the burglar had posed as a church-goer and stayed behind after the last Sunday service at 6.30 pm. The thief is believed to have used a spike to prise open the donation boxes.
