Cook goes on trial for trafficking

A COOK landed in Hong Kong with almost three kilograms of cocaine hidden in his briefcase, the High Court heard yesterday.

Lu Xiaoming, 39, originally from Shanghai but now living in Bolivia, denies trafficking in a dangerous drug.

Opening the Crown's case, prosecutor Paul Madigan told a jury and Deputy Judge Yeung that Lu arrived in the territory from Bolivia on May 1 on a transit visa.

The court heard Customs officers at Kai Tak who were checking his luggage became suspicious because a briefcase stored inside his suitcase appeared to be very heavy.

Mr Madigan said that when the briefcase was X-rayed, 2.9 kilograms of cocaine was found concealed in a false top and bottom.

The trial continues.
