ELECTED legislator Andrew Wong Wang-fat yesterday became the first non-government official to chair the law-making body's powerful Finance Committee.
Mr Wong, an independent, was elected unopposed. Appointed legislator Roger Luk Koon-hoo was chosen as deputy chairman.
Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang used to chair the powerful committee, which decides whether to approve government proposals involving expenditure from public funds.
The change of chairmanship follows a Legco resolution in July which amended the council's standing orders.
However, Mrs Chan and Financial Secretary Sir Hamish Macleod will remain members of the committee in the 1994-95 session.
An elected legislator was needed to chair the committee in preparation for next year's change of Legco membership.
