A MAN banned from visiting his nine-year-old son, who is in hospital being treated for injuries allegedly inflicted by him, yesterday defended his right to beat the boy.

The 32-year-old man, a Mr Chan who cannot be further identified for legal reasons, said he had no choice but to beat the boy although he admitted he might have used too much force.

'I was told by a social worker from the Social Welfare Department and the police that I cannot visit him.

'I accept the order as I understand they're afraid I would do more harm to the boy. But I would not beat him again,' Mr Chan said.

The father said he requested the social worker to make a daily report to him about his son's condition, which yesterday was said to be satisfactory.

Mr Chan was arrested and released on bail on Thursday after a social worker found cane marks on the legs and hands of his son. Mr Chan is to report to the police again on October 27.
