THE moment of truth arrives for Hong Kong's five Asian Games track and field hopefuls today when the blue riband athletics competition gets underway.
Winnie Ng is the first Hong Kong track and field athlete to compete in the Games as the marathon gets underway.
The others, ace woman hurdler Chan Sau-ying, junior woman middle distance runner Maggie Chan Man-yee, and men's high jumper Chang Yu-ho and hammer thrower Sammy Fong Charm-hung will compete tomorrow and Tuesday.
Veteran Ng is in fine form at the moment after having notched up a half marathon career best time of one hour 17 minutes 35 seconds in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Oslo three weeks ago which was followed by a World Masters Games half marathon victory in Brisbane just a week later.
'I am aiming to run below two hours 45 minutes in the Games marathon' Ng said prior to her departure for Hiroshima on Tuesday.
Ng could well come much closer to 2:40 for the 42.2 kilometres journey after having clocked 2:47:37 when she won last June's Melbourne Marathon in her last race over the full distance.
Hurdler Chan Sau-ying who is Hong Kong's main hope for an athletics medal competes in the women's 100 metres hurdles heats on tomorrow.
