CHAN Tan-lui and Chai Po-wa began their quest for a second medal at the Asian Games on a brisk note when they swept into the quarter-finals of the women's table tennis doubles event yesterday.

     Hong Kong's top combination lost no time in registering a quickfire 21-13, 21-16 win over Indonesia's Rossy Dipoyanti and Fauziah Yulianti in a second-round match.

     Chan and Chai received a bye into the second round. Having already collected a silver medal in the women's team event last week, the duo are well on course to win another medal.

     They meet South Korea's Park Hae-jung and Ryu Ji-hye in the quarter-finals on Friday. Favourites to beat them, the Hong Kong duo are then seeded to meet China's Deng Yaping and Qiao Hong in the semis.

     The Chinese duo also easily booked their quarter-final spot with a straight-games win over Taiwan's Bai Hui-yin and Tsui Hsiu-li.

     Hong Kong's other doubles combination in the women's event, Chan Suk-yuen and Cheng To were eliminated in the second round yesterday. Having got a bye into this stage, Chan and Cheng were beaten 9-21, 10-21 by Taiwanese Chen Jing and Xu Jing.

     Leading men's pair, Chan Chi-ming and Lau Chun-fung made it through to the second round today with a 21-18, 21-10 win over Macanese Chan Tin and Wong Kuak. But their prospects of progressing look slim as they come up against Japan's Sei Ito and K. Takeya in the second round.

   Chan Tan-lui, who has been playing some of her best table tennis recently, partnered Chan Kong-wah in the mixed doubles event.

     The duo progressed smoothly into the quarter-finals before losing to South Koreans Yoo Nam-kyu and Park Hae-jung.

     The two Chans, who received a first-round bye, made light work of Vietnamese Vu Manh and Ngo Thu Thuy in the second round, winning 21-11, 21-13. But they found the Koreans a tougher proposition - tumbling to a 15-21, 16-21 defeat.

     Hong Kong's other mixed doubles combination, Chan Chi-ming and Cheng To, met an early demise, losing to Indonesians Hadiyudo Prayitno and Rossy Dipoyanti 16-21, 21-16, 15-21.

     The singles events in table tennis start today with Chai Po-wa and Chan Tan-lui expected to win their early games. But Chan, who is drawn to meet world number two Qiao Hong in the quarter-finals, faces a hard task to get herself into medal contention.

     The territory's number one player, Chai, however, can expect a smooth path until the semi-finals, where she is seeded to meet world number one Deng Yaping.

    Despite a brave attempt by Melody Yeung Ka-ling, the Hong Kong's tenpin bowlers will return home empty-handed.

    Melody, the only local woman in the last event, the masters, finished in sixth place and thus failed to qualify for the finals. Only the top three bowlers out of a field of 16 qualify for the masters final.

     Melody totalled 2,992 after 15 games. But that was not good enough to get her into the last three, as she was 61 pins off third-placed Irene Garcia of the Philippines.

     In the men's masters, Hong Kong's Chung Him finished in fifth position while Sonny Hui Cheung-kwok ended one before last in the 16-strong field. Chung totalled 3,130 pins in his 15 games, while Sonny finished with an aggregate of 2,898.

     Hong Kong's presence in badminton came to a premature end yesterday. Top nations Indonesia and Thailand accounted for the local victims in action in the men's and women's singles and the mixed doubles events.

     The territory's number one player, Wong Wai-lap managed to squeeze a game out of Thai Teeranun Chaingta. But that was just a consolation as he lost 12-15, 15-7, 11-15.

     In the women's singles, Cheng Yin-sat went down to Thailand's Pornsawan Plungwech 2-11, 8-11, while compatriot Chan Oi-ni was defeated in straight games by Indonesian Yuliani Sentosa 8-11, 5-11.
