A FORMER British naval attache to Beijing is facing fraud charges before a court martial over claims that he claimed expenses for trips he had never made around China and to Hong Kong.
Captain Alan Armstrong was caught after he claimed for a family break at the popular Chinese resort of Beidaihe, near Beijing.
He said the town was popular with senior Chinese politicians with whom it was important to make contact, the court martial in Plymouth heard.
Armstrong, 53, is accused of obtaining GBP5,368 (HK$65,758) in expenses to which he was not entitled and attempting to obtain a further GBP2,588.
He denies eight charges of dishonestly obtaining cash by deception, two charges of attempting to obtain cash by deception and a theft charge.
His alleged fraudulent claims for travel in China and Hong Kong were spotted by the embassy's defence attache.
