BOOM apprentice Simon 'Hong Kong' Yim not only went out with a winner yesterday - he also more or less booked himself a 10-week stint with Newmarket trainer Mark Tompkins.

Yim rode the perfect race on Miss Piggy to land the feature Ladies event.

It was his seventh win in a remarkable season and, even at this early stage he's in an almost unassailable lead in the first running of the Ritz Club apprentice award.

Yim has zoomed to 85 points and is a staggering 53 points clear of his nearest pursuer Rickie C. K. Chung in the apprentice standings.

Tompkins has agreed not only to give rides to the winning apprentice but good ones at that and local champion trainer Ivan Allan says that the lucky lad can also ride his horses.

Yim can catch up with some old Hong Kong connections while with Tompkins as dual Hong Kong champion jockey Philip Robinson is attached to him.

Robinson will be staggeringly surprised at the progress Yim has made. One of the last times he saw him ride he could barely sit on and had been whipped across the back by Tony Cruz.
