ABERDEEN is to get a facelift San Francisco-style with the construction of a fisherman's wharf.

A consultant is being selected to transform the fish market into a wharf similar to those in San Francisco and Sydney, featuring shops and restaurants, says fisheries officer Edward Wong Cheuk-yee.

The Aberdeen fish market, built in the early 1950s, needed a facelift and the Fish Marketing Organisation thought it was the right opportunity to add some new elements, Mr Wong said.

'The fishing industry has changed a lot over the past few decades. The fish market is now a bit out-dated,' he said.

The project, tentatively called the Aberdeen New Fish Market Complex, would house the wholesale fish market, processing centres for fishery products, shops selling shipping equipment, arts and crafts shops, eateries and an exhibition hall.

Mr Wong said the project would be a tourist attraction when it was completed in about four years.
