Gambling den boss shot dead

A GAMBLING den operator was shot in the head in Yuen Long early yesterday in what appears to be a triad execution.

Wong Yuk-lam, 33, was found lying between two trailers at the Chun Hing container yard in Fuk Hi Street at 8.30 am by a 23-year-old driver.

Initial examination indicated he was shot in the right temple. An autopsy is expected to be conducted today.

A police source said: 'It appears to be a triad execution because he was shot at almost point blank range. We were told by his 35-year-old sister that Wong was a member of the Wo On Lok [triad], active in gambling in the Yau Tsim district.' But Senior Superintendent (Crime) of New Territories North, Martin Cowley, said: 'We have an open mind as to why he was killed and we can't say it is triad-related.' Wong was arrested by police four times between 1992 and last year for operating illegal gambling dens. He had also been arrested for common assault.

Wong, a former lorry driver, had lived in Chai Wan for more than 10 years and had two sons by two women.

His 74-year-old mother, Lee Tai, said: 'He never told me what he was doing outside. He never took money home and never shouldered the responsibility of looking after his two sons, who are staying with me.' Wong's oldest son, aged 11, said: 'He came home once every one or three weeks. He seldom talked to us.' His other son is two.
