Police in talks over suspects
MACAU detectives are in Zhuhai negotiating for the return to the enclave of eight men suspected of carrying out May's $34 million armed robbery at the Hyatt Hotel casino.
But one officer said that even if police were satisfied the Zhuhai authorities had the right people, it would be difficult to get them back to Macau to face trial.
Because the suspects were also allegedly involved in crimes committed in China, they would be tried there first and were likely to face severe punishment, possibly execution.
Zhuhai officials said the eight had escaped with tens of millions of dollars in robberies since 1991, including at least four Macau banks and casinos.
The Hyatt robbery took place on May 12 when six men armed with AK-47 automatic rifles and pistols fired shots into the ceiling before escaping with the cash.
