ROGER Luk Koon-hoo believes the most difficult task facing him following his promotion to deputy chief executive of Hang Seng Bank is to give the bank a new, less conservative image.

'Hang Seng Bank is a popular name in Hong Kong's retail banking sector,' he said.

'We always have relied on word-of-mouth to draw customers, but in this era of advertising, other banks have been good at packaging themselves,' said Mr Luk, who is the nephew of the bank's chairman, Sir Quo-wei Lee.

Mr Luk admitted the bank had fallen behind other banks in the territory in self-promotion.

'By improving our promotion, we expect our retail banking services to yield better results,'he said.

The bank already has been sponsoring concerts of Canto-pop singers Vivian Chow and Faye Wong, and more concert sponsorships will follow.

Having been with the bank for 19 years, Mr Luk, 43, said it always had tried to strike a balance between taking initiatives and maintaining a steady and cautious pace.
