ZHUHAI, one of the three special economic zones in Guangdong province, has further improved its port facilities to help the rapid economic development of the Pearl River Delta, according to Xinhua (the New China News Agency).

Zhuhai has 24 state-level outlets spreading across the city, the new development zone and nearby islands. Most important are the ports of Gongbei and Jiuzhou.

Gongbei is the only land port linking China with Macau. It enables 140,000 passengers to enter and leave the mainland every day, while handling more than 4,000 tonnes of cargo.

Jiuzhou harbour is able to provide water-land through-transport for foreign trade in Zhuhai, the Pearl River Delta and western Guangdong.

The harbour handled 2.3 million tonnes of goods and 200,000 standard containers last year, ranking first in the province.

To make use of the geographical advantages of bordering Hong Kong and Macau, and to speed up economic development and opening up, Zhuhai has launched a 'big port' project.
