HEWLETT-Packard yesterday announced the OmniBook 4000 PC, its first colour notebook, and launched more powerful colour-screen versions of its popular OmniBook subnotebook.

The two new systems were designed to 'address the full range of today's mobile professional computing needs', an HP spokesman said.

The HP OmniBook 4000 is an advanced notebook weighing 3.13 kilograms alone, and 3.27 kg with all its travelling accessories.

Among other things, it features built-in stereo sound capabilities and a back-lit colour VGA screen with 640 x 480 resolution.

The OmniBook 600 combines a similar 640 x 480 backlit colour VGA screen with accelerated local bus video technology and one megabyte of video RAM.

The subnotebook has a travelling weight - including adaptor and power cable - of 2.10 kg and comes with a rechargeable nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery that HP claims lasts up to four hours.

'Our primary target for mainstream systems is corporate professionals,' the HP spokesman said. 'Our secondary targets are individuals and self-employed people - basically mobile professionals.' Besides an Instant-On feature that allows users to turn the computer on at the place where they left their work, the OmniBook 600 comes with an HP personal information manager (PIM), financial calculator, and hot function keys.
