IT WAS a day to cherish for Form Six student Germaine Yeung who won a silver medal in the 100 m at the 23rd athletic meet of the YWCA Hioe Tjo Yoeng College.
'It is the first time I have participated in an event on sports day and I am so thrilled about winning the medal,' she said.
'My classmates thought because I was thin and tall, I could run and win. They kept on asking me until I said yes! And now see, I have won this medal.' For the girls' Grade A individual champion, Andy Chan Wing-sze, her victory was a dream-come-true.
'It had long been my dream since I first joined the school and finally I saw it coming true in Form Six.' Thanks to the efforts and encouragement of the school's PE teacher, the number of participants this year reached a record high: nearly 90 per cent of students joined one or more events during the meet.
Though the venue, Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground, was not an ideal one, with the periodic low-flying aircraft disturbing the peace, it did not affect the enthusiasm of the participants.
The day climaxed with the staff invitation relay. The guest-of-honour was founding principal Yvonne Ng.
