SO JUST what does the Basic Law have to say about Pets of the Month? That was the question on producer-director Allen Fung's lips the other day, shortly after he announced he had just landed a potentially lucrative deal. The veteran film-maker, who also runs one of the best local laser-disc distribution and retail outfits, Laserama, has just acquired distribution rights to Penthouse video and laser-discs in Hong Kong.
To do so successfully, he is about to launch a publicity campaign aimed at whitewashing Penthouse's image and adding class to the soft-porn product.
'So far, Hong Kong is the only Asian country where Penthouse can release a full, uncut version,' Fung said.
'In almost all the other countries like Taiwan and the Philippines [the product] has to be censored. Japan blocks certain parts, and Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia ban it from import.' Fung's concern is that Hong Kong may also block 'certain parts' after 1997 should censorship standards tighten.
