Big four industries dominate exports

THE four major industries accounted for 71 per cent of Hong Kong's total domestic exports of manufactured goods in the third quarter, according to the Census and Statistics Department.

The four industries are textiles, wearing apparel, consumer electrical and electronic products, and machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components.

Domestic exports of textiles rose eight per cent to $14.9 billion, while those of machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components increased 10 per cent to $8.4 billion.

Exports of wearing apparel remained unchanged at $11.8 billion. But exports of consumer electrical and electronic products dropped one per cent to $8.4 billion.

More significant absolute increases in the value of domestic exports were recorded for chemicals and chemical products, which soared $245 million or 14 per cent.

Tobacco manufactures surged $171 million or 35 per cent, and food $154 million or 30 per cent.
