27 Elgin St, SoHo, Central Tel: 2810 0005 The vibe: this prime SoHo spot opens out onto Elgin, just steps away from Peel Street. The decor combines glass, cool colours, mirrors and plush seating, and the atmosphere is unpretentious. Patrons sit comfortably or stand outside while music spills out onto the street. The drinks: the champagne cocktail and signature drink list is extensive. The Flute (HK$120) is a potent mix of champagne, mint, fresh strawberries and raspberries and raspberry liqueur. The flavours mask the alcohol, rather than enhance it, which may appeal to people who don't usually like to drink. Pink (HK$90) is one of the bar's signature cocktails, and combines 'premium pinot grigio white wine, raspberry liqueur, fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and fresh mint leaves soaked in tonic water'. But the result is akin to Boone's Farm wine. Overheard about the Citrus Blush (HK$90), another signature drink: 'It tastes like fresh fruit that has been left out on the counter all day.' Alas, the cocktails miss the mark. A safer bet may be the champagne and wine list, which includes Charles le Bel, de la Couronne (HK$88) and Domaine Magellan Merlot 2007 (HK$70). There's Stella Artois on tap (HK$60, pint), and spirits on offer. The verdict: the staff are friendly and efficient. If you can navigate the cocktail menu, Flutes is a comfortable place to drink and catch up with friends.
