The vibe: tucked down a narrow lane behind the Green Mouse restaurant, stumbling upon JaaBar is like discovering a secret hideaway. This bijou bar won't remain unknown for long. Its cosy sofas, chandeliers and the paintings adorning the wall give it a bordello feel.
The similarity to Petticoat Lane, a hidden gem of the 1990s Hong Kong bar scene, is deliberate, as the inspirations behind the bar were involved in that one, too. With space at a minimum, how homely you feel will depend on how you like the company. The drinks: mixed fresh fruit forms the basis of some of the excellent signature cocktails (HK$75). Raspberries, vodka and Prosecco give the Jaa a tart fizz, while blackcurrants and fresh mint play off each other in the refreshing, but sweeter Obama. Salad in a Glass, JaaBar's twist on the Bloody Mary that uses bacon-infused vodka, proved so popular in the first three months it was off the menu when we went as they were making a new batch of the liquor.
The range of spirits and beers is small but well selected, with Kronenberg 1664 on tap. The bar staff are friendly and there are no rip-off prices, with a bottle of champagne at HK$720. The verdict: the perfect getaway from Central's rowdy bar scene. It's officially for members only, so sign up fast as this place is already packed on weekends.
