'Kate Middleton' arrives in Kowloon to groom local wannabe princesses

Her name is Kate; she has a trim, athletic build, long and glossy chestnut locks and blue eyes that light up when she smiles. For her big public appearance recently, she wore a sapphire-coloured dress to match the large engagement ring on her left hand. Meet Kate Bevan, a 21-year-old from Birmingham, England, and professional Kate Middleton lookalike. In Hong Kong for the first time, the royal impersonator was invited to teach at a princess boot camp at the APM mall in Kowloon Bay on Friday to an eager group of 10 would-be mini princesses .

'I quit my job in pharmaceuticals last November to focus on this career, and since then I've been completely booked up for all kinds of events and photo shoots, in Britain, Ireland, New Zealand and now Hong Kong,' Bevan said. 'For me, the most challenging aspect of making a convincing Kate [Middleton] is the accent. I've got a rather country accent, while she grew up in London in a posh environment. I've had a few elocution lessons to work on it. So far, I haven't had many speaking engagements, but I want to be prepared for that.'

Bevan had no trouble convincing her little pupils in Hong Kong of her princess-like qualities; each was transfixed as she demonstrated the proper walk, curtsy and tea etiquette for any aspiring royal. Five-year-old Cherie Law Cheuk-nei (pictured with Bevan) was one of the little ladies to graduate from Bevan's class. For her, the hardest part was walking with a book balanced on the head. She excelled at curtsying, having had lots of practice in ballet class.

'The children are adorable; people in general are lovely here,' said Bevan, who did a bit of shopping in Central and visited the Peak during her trip. 'Back home, the competition is quite fierce. There are about three good Prince William lookalikes, one of whom I work with regularly, and about 30 Kate impersonators. I'd say I'm in demand because I've committed to it full-time. I figure, it's not something that will last forever, and now is the time to really go for it.'
