Not everything Japan produces is shadowed by radiation fears. Well-heeled tai-tais came out en masse for pearl-jewellery brand Mikimoto's charity cocktail party at its boutique in Central's IFC Mall on Thursday. Socialites and celebrity guests such as actress Anita Yuen Wing-yee (second left) and models Janet Ma Sze-wai, Cissy Wang and Irene Wang (left) were invited to the charity shopping night. The brand donated HK$800,000 and the sales of the shopping night to the Hong Kong Red Cross to support disaster relief in Japan. Japanese Consul General Yuji Kumamaru was also present for the donation ceremony. The generous guests expressed their eagerness to support the cause. Many went home with bags of jewellery. Yuen, who wore a necklace worth more than HK$10 million, said her singer husband Julian Cheung Chi-lam often bought her jewellery. 'I love pearls. But I normally don't even have to ask him to buy me jewellery, he'll do it voluntarily.' The other celebrity wife, Cissy Wang (second right, with PR consultant Real Ting on her left), said she rarely wore jewellery given by her action-star husband Donnie Yen Ji-dan. 'Now that you ask, I haven't opened my jewellery box for a long time. I was afraid the sharp ends would hurt my children.' But it would be hard for the tai-tais to turn down those harmless pearls.
