Wan Chai, which used to be much closer to the harbour before several land reclamation projects, has a rich history. Right next to Central, which has always been the centre for power and commerce, Wan Chai has served as a major entertainment area for locals and visitors.
The district is also famed for its cultural heritage, with Hong Kong's oldest post office, the century-old Blue House, Green House and the Wo Cheung Pawn Shop.
With so much to offer, it is hardly surprising that walking tours have been organised. These are popular not only with tourists but also with locals, especially schools. The tours typically cover the Wan Chai waterfront, cultural spots, temples and streets with a story to tell.
No mention of Wan Chai's heritage is complete without the villain-hitting rituals under the Ngo Keng Kiu (Goose Neck Bridge) on Canal Road East. Day and night, you will find several women chanting and hitting man-shaped paper cut-outs with a slipper to chase away any evil spirits around their clients - all for a fee, of course.
