Mainland farmers last month discovered their watermelons were exploding. Some of them have suffered huge losses because they had taken out bank loans to finance their fruit investments.

The farmers were told by so-called watermelon experts to add growth chemicals to boost their crop. However, the growth was uncontrollable and resulted in thousands of watermelons blowing up.

I was surprised to read this story because I have never heard of such a thing. We should not blame the watermelon experts, but it is worth noting that mainland farmers usually add fertilisers and other chemicals to boost their crops. Many of these chemicals are harmful.

For me, food from organic farmers appears to be safest because they guarantee their products are chemical-free.

I hope the government can promote the benefits of organic food and encourage consumers to give it a go.
