An unusual online announcement of elopement by a mainland celebrity investor has set the mainland's internet abuzz. On Monday, 50-year-old private equity investor Wang Gongquan, a partner in CDH Investments, wrote in his microblog that he had planned to run away with Wang Qin, 34, which mainland media reported was a reference to the founder of the Jiangsu Zhongfu Science and Technology Industrial Group. 'I cannot live up to the expectation and trust from all of you [relatives, friends and colleagues] or explain it. I am begging for your forgiveness,' he wrote. This Sina Weibo posting had been forwarded more than 73,000 times and received nearly 40,000 comments by late yesterday. Many suspect that it is another sophisticated publicity stunt, although some believe Wang is sincere. Wang Gongquan, who is married, wrote that he did not care that it would ruin his reputation and he had to switch off his mobile phone and use his microblog to reveal his elopement to avoid apologising to all callers. 'There are so many appointments and responsibilities that I cannot make,' he wrote. CDH issued a statement saying that Wang Gongquan was 'taking some time off and that both the venture and private equity fund were operating normally', Xinhua said. In 1991, he was one of the founders of Vantone Industry Group and was called one of the 'six gentlemen of Vantone'. A Jilin native, he was an advocate of citizen involvement, the website of Caixin reported. He joined a protest to win the release of some detained petitioners from a 'black jail' in Beijing. Eeo.com.cn quoted a CDH Investments insider as saying company executives had held an urgent meeting on Tuesday to discuss a response to Wang's sudden departure. Yu Lei, a well-known business columnist, posted on his microblog: 'A friend familiar with the investment field told me that the plan to elope was actually a marketing tactic; the fact is that they will open a new private equity company. People who are disappointed in love can remain disappointed, and those who are in the microblog marketing business can learn from the case.' CDH Investments, established in 2002, focuses on investments in private equity, venture capital, property and public equity markets. It manages more than US$5.5 billion from more than 100 international and domestic institutional investors, its website says.
