HONG KONG citizen Daniel Chan Chi-pun, 38, will be executed by Singapore authorities early on Friday for drug offences after a plea for clemency was rejected.

His wife and their six-year-old son left for Singapore's Changi prison yesterday.

The wife, identified only as Mrs Chan, told the South China Morning Post she believed her husband was dealing in heroin because he needed money to try to find a cure for their son's blindness.

The British High Commission said it was notified of the execution last week, following the rejection of Chan's plea for clemency to Singapore President Ong Teng Cheong. The British Government also had submitted a plea on behalf of Chan.

Colin Lane, of the British High Commission in Singapore, said Chan appeared 'resigned' but 'was smiling' when he visited him last month.

A Christian volunteer who recently visited Chan said religion had helped him cope with prison life at Changi.
