THE wife of Daniel Chan Chi-pun, who faces the Singapore hangman's noose, blames herself for her security guard husband's predicament.

She said Chan was devastated when he found out six months after their son was born that the child was blind.

Mrs Chan said because there was doubt as to what caused his blindness, she had pressured her husband for money so they could seek a cure overseas.

'Both my husband and I could not get over the fact that we had a blind son. It was a severe blow to my husband. He became quiet.

'I had tuberculosis at the time but I had to take our son to doctors and therapists every week. I could not cope. I complained every day. I kept telling my husband if he had money our son would be able to get an operation overseas.

'I once said to him perhaps we should have another child, a healthy child. But he refused. He said he did not want my son to become a spare.' She said Chan was a responsible father, good not only to their son, but to Mrs Chan's other son from a previous marriage.

'I think he chose to deal in drugs because he wanted money to send our son overseas for a cure.
