With so much kickback hitting the horses on the inside surface, even before the rain, perhaps it required a known dirt performer to shine but even trainer Francis Lui Kin-wai didn't anticipate the return to winning form of Alice Too at 74-1 under Piere Strydom. The eight-year-old had not managed a place in 13 previous turf runs and his golden patch of form had been three all-weather wins in succession more than two years ago. Since those days, the gelding had sunk to a rating of 27 and that had as much to do with the selection of the 1,800m turf race as any other factor. 'He's an old horse with a low rating, so we thought he might face retirement at the end of the season, and the owner wanted to run him while he still can,' Lui said. 'We wanted a dirt race but there just weren't any available.'
