A shard of lightning flashes across the black sky and a deafening roar of thunder echoes over the black hills. Thor crashes his mighty hammer against the night and the storm grows to its peak. The raging tempest reminds the mortal beings below of the divine power behind all things on Earth and in the dark heavens. Welcome to the world of the Norse gods.

At the beginning of time

Norse myths are the legends and beliefs of the pre-Christian civilisations of northern Europe and Scandinavia between AD200 and 500. The mythology is rich in stories of gods, giants, immortals, dwarves and monsters.

Life for humans began in the realm of Midgard when the god Odin killed the giant Ymir. Midgard is connected to Asgard, the realm of the gods, by a gigantic rainbow bridge that few humans have the courage to cross.

There are seven other realms in the universe, which is represented by a giant tree, Yggdrasil, the World Tree, around which nine realms exist. The roots of the tree grow down into the underworld.
