Green is the new black as Redress brings eco-fashion to the catwalk
Hong Kong eco-fashion charity Redress rolled out the green carpet for earth-friendly stylistas and celebrities for its first ever Redress on the Runway show at the W Hotel.
More than 350 fashion industry insiders gathered for the two-part runway event, which showcased the work of six young finalists vying for the EcoChic Design Award, and ready-to-wear and one-off couture numbers by leading designers and labels from around the world.
The name of the game was cutting-edge style done with minimum textiles waste. Each look that made the cut was produced using a combination of reconstruction, recycling, upcycling and zero-material wastage. The winner, announced at the end of Friday's show, was Janko Lam Chun-kuk. As part of her prize, she will get the chance to work with Esprit and British eco-label From Somewhere.
Hong Kong's Johanna Ho doubled up as head of the judging panel and participating designer in the second runway show of international eco-couture creations.
'My fellow judges made for good company, all being from different backgrounds,' Ho said. 'I actually learned a lot from the different thinking processes each had. Overall, we are pleasantly surprised with the standards of design and sustainability each finalist brought to the table.'
Artist Pauline Yau contributed a series of paper headdresses that stole the show during the ready-to-wear segment. True to the spirit of the evening, her creations were recycled from a previous display for Lane Crawford.
