Who is Ratko Mladic? Mladic, 69, is a former Bosnian Serb military commander. The army general had been on the run from international authorities for almost 16 years until his arrest by security forces last Thursday in Serbia.
What?
What is he accused of? He is accused of being responsible for atrocities committed during the Bosnian war. These include the siege of the city of Sarajevo, lasting 44 months, during which 10,000 people were killed. He is also charged with the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the town of Srebrenica.
When?
When was that war? The Bosnian war took place from April 1992 to December 1995 in Bosnia and Herzogovina. These areas of former Yugoslavia, in eastern Europe, were inhabited mainly by Muslims. They declared independence in February 1992 following the break up of Yugoslavia after years of internal conflict. But Serbians living in the areas objected and Bosnian Serb and Croat military forces attacked the republic to claim the territory for nearby Serbia.
