A HOUSEWIFE who claimed she was under the influence of sleeping pills was found guilty yesterday of robbing a clothes store at knifepoint.
Judge Sweeney deferred sentencing Fung Mui-lee, 35, until December 13 pending psychiatric and background reports.
Fung was convicted of robbing the Chui Yat Fashion Shop in Hunghom on July 23 and assaulting taxi driver Tang Hon-leung with intent to prevent her arrest.
Despite accepting that Fung had taken a large quantity of the sleeping pill Imovane on the day of the robbery, Judge Sweeney rejected the defence of intoxication and insanity.
Delivering his verdict in the District Court yesterday, the judge said: 'I find overwhelming, uncontested evidence of a series of activities which . . . could not have been carried out by persons whose conscious mind was not involved.' During the trial, defence counsel Andrew Ma called evidence from psychiatrist Dr Chung See-yuen, who said that due to an overdose of sleeping pills, Fung could not form a requisite intent to commit the offence.
Earlier the court heard Fung stole 100 dresses worth $10,600 from the shop and made her escape in a taxi after holding a knife to the driver's throat.
