LIANG Peddle Thorp (LPT), designer of the Peninsular Group's The Landmark building in Ho Chi Minh City, is the first overseas architect to gain permission to open a representative office in Vietnam.

The Australian international architectural firm has been awarded a representative office licence by the Vietnamese Government, according to Daryl Parker, LPT's Vietnam director.

Becoming legally established would also help the firm find joint-venture partners more easily, he said.

The licence will allow the company to conduct marketing and research activities in the country for three years.

However, Mr Parker was obliged to continue carrying out conceptual work in Hong Kong, where LPT also has an office.

But, he hoped, the Vietnamese Government would eventually allow him to design buildings in Vietnam.
