With 10 'mega' infrastructure projects on the go, as well as all manner of MTR extensions and urban developments, there is currently no shortage of work for the city's construction sector.

However, contractors are facing headaches of another kind. The surge in projects, both locally and across the mainland, is creating unprecedented demand for experienced staff at all levels and giving new urgency to recruitment and retention initiatives.

Chun Wo Construction and Engineering, which focuses on projects with high technical specifications that have design and build elements, has noticed a lack of mid-level managers with 10 or more years' experience.

This stems from the lengthy industry slump which forced many professionals to find work overseas. And it means that, when considering candidates, a discernible 'gap' now exists in Hong Kong between the senior ranks and those who are still relative newcomers to the field.

'We are mainly looking to fill positions in technical grades,' says Wilfred Chau Chung-yau, Chun Wo's human resources manager. He is referring to roles for project managers, site agents, senior engineers, and quantity surveyors. Applicants should have a degree in civil engineering and be chartered members of a recognised professional body.

Chau says there are likely to be regular openings for safety and environmental officers, foremen, technical assistants and apprentices. Where appropriate, applicants who have eight to 10 years' experience and are certified members of the Chartered Institute of Building generally have a head start.
