The city has been moved by the story of a girl who sacrificed her life to save her younger sister in the Ma Tau Wai blaze last Wednesday.

Summer Tse Yan-yee is said to have shielded her five-year-old sister with her body from smoke and fire as they fled the building.

In a particularly tragic twist of fate, the brave teen, who was a Young Post Junior Reporter and frequent contributor to the poetry page, would have turned 19 on Tuesday.

Her friend Betty told Young Post that Summer was an elegant, lovely and brave girl. She was often called 'Goddess' by her classmates. Betty said she was grateful for the love that Summer had always shown her and all her friends.

Teachers at Kowloon True Light Middle School, where Summer was a Form Seven student, also said the teenager had admirable qualities.

Principal Lee Yi-ying described Summer as a gentle, polite and hard-working student. She added she was proud of Summer for sacrificing herself to save others.

In the eyes of the teachers, Summer was an elite student. They are confident she would have gone on to university and done very well.
