'We put more emphasis on students' involvement in school activities,' said adjudicator Diana Wong, principal of St Paul's Secondary School.

Other selection criteria included participation in community activities and academic performance, said another adjudicator Yik Kwan, vice-principal of La Salle College.

Queen's College principal Lee Kar-hung said the panel of judges agreed that outstanding students should have all-round achievement.

Working through the more than 170 applications from 10 am to 5.30 pm, the five semi-final adjudicators said the standard of this year's participants was high.

'They all have impressive academic achievements and provide a lot of services to the community. We are stricter than last year in selecting the finalists,' said Diocesan Girls' School principal Elim Lau, who was also a semi-final adjudicator last year.
