Ultimate R&B: The Love Collection 2011 contains some great hits, but not enough to make it 'ultimate'.
It is debatable whether this two-disc compilation of love songs contains the best of recent offerings. Notably, tracks by major players such as Usher and Alicia Keys are missing; perhaps it is simply a case of record labels sticking to their own artists. Some R'n'B fans may be a little disappointed as a result.
The selection gets off to a perfect start with I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas. This summer anthem from 2009 was huge on dancefloors around the world but, while it's an upbeat opener, it's hardly a 'love song'.
Hits by artists such as Taio Cruz, Rihanna and Maroon 5 are also welcome additions.
Overall the general vibe of the music is relaxed and laidback. There is a great balance of songs. Some are smooth and soft; Kiss Goodbye, by Avant, has a jazzy edge to its mellow tune and romantic, gushing lyrics. Others offer beats to make you tap your feet or want to dance, like Ne-Yo's Beautiful Monster.
