This summer we say goodbye to hippy chic and welcome the modern gypsy. With so many of the spring-summer collections paying homage to the 1970s, designers have looked to couturier Yves Saint Laurent for inspiration. Aside from his rich colour palette, they have chosen to revive his popular gypsy look.
The brand's current designer, Stefano Pilati, had the most modern and wearable interpretation: sheer chiffon gypsy dresses, blouses with billowing sleeves and skirts decorated with colourful ruffles at the hemline. Choose separates with a ruffled hem or decoration. Pleated maxi-skirts can also create the desired effect, but nothing is sexier than a white, off-the-shoulder peasant blouse.
Jewellery
It's all about gold, gold and more gold. Round hoops are cliche, so go for simple yet chunky earrings and bracelets such as the sculpted cable gold cuff (HK$73,000) from David Yurman.
Bags
While gypsies traditionally have an earthy look, the 2011 version is delicate but refined. Choose bags that feature handmade details or interesting fabrics and textures. For example, the Nightingale bag by Givenchy is made from laser cut leather that resembles lace (HK$19,995 from Maria Luisa) for a luxe but crafty feel.
