Chen Yang, a PhD student at Chinese University of Hong Kong, says: 'Brige to China reminds us that, at all times, people have to join forces and try their best to help those who are in need. This spirit does not only start and last for the summer, it should be carried through each volunteer's life.'

Dr Albert Chau, dean of student affairs at the University of Hong Kong, encouraged students to participate in the event. 'It is important for students to understand the importance of being responsible to society and use their knowledge and skills to help people around us,' Chau said.

The foundation has built 18 bridges in impoverished areas on the mainland. Its aim is to enhance travel and communication between villagers, students and city residents.
