 This is one of those little gems you'll be so glad you discovered. This friendly cafe offers great-deal lunches, but be sure to save space for dessert. Its selection of cakes is terribly tempting. We love the banoffee pie and the generous portions.

2 Patisserie Tony Wong
 If you're bored with Hong Kong's classic cakes, head to this little paradise in Kowloon City. Pastries range from the signature rose cake to sweet mousses; all are wonderfully presented. We recommend the chocolate truffle cake and mixed berries Napoleon.

3 Portobello 
 If you've ever walked down Staunton Street and  have a sweet-tooth, you must have noticed the delicious-looking cakes inside Portobello. The good news is: they taste as good as they look. The cute round tables and warm interior give a European feel to the place. It's perfect for tea!

4 Buffy's Bakery
 This neighbourhood bakery is a real find. Apart from freshly baked breads, it offers crunchy cookies and pastries. Those who want to try different kinds of cakes without eating too much can buy the mini-pastries and splurge without guilt.

5 Sift 
 Considered by many as the 'Mecca' of Hong Kong desserts, Sift is renowned for its cupcakes. The Graham Street shop offers a rich menu of classic pastries including cheesecake, fraisier (made with fresh strawberries) and opera (with coffee, almond and chocolate). Our pick: the Sift chocolate cake and the chocolate meringue Pavlova. Yum!

6 Italian Tomato
 The Italian restaurant chain has cafes where it sells its popular round cakes. Mostly mousse-based, they are light and fluffy and make ideal birthday cakes. We highly recommend the apple pie and, for chocoholics, the Frangelico (made with hazelnuts).

7 Zoe
 Zoe has three branches of cake shops on Hong Kong Island and prides itself on being one of the best boutique cafes. Try its chocolate lava cake for the utmost savoury chocolate experience.

8 Sweet Secrets & Main Street Cafe 
 Here's how to satisfy your cheesecake craving: head to Sweet Secrets for a creamy, soft New York cheesecake. Slices are not huge, but every bite is worth every penny. Or, go down to the basement of Eaton Hotel to find Main Street Cafe. This quiet place with cosy sofas is renowned for its cheesecakes. From the classic strawberry or blueberry cheesecakes to more unconventional flavours like lychee or green tea, there is a match for everyone. Slices are huge, even for the 'Dr No-fat cheesecake', and especially for the gigantic Manhattan cheesecake. The lemon-glazed doughnut with custard filling is also a must-try.

9 Teresa Festival 
 This popular Wan Chai shop has been around for many years, and people still crave its homemade-style cakes. What keeps customers coming back is the freshness of its cakes. We also love the cookies, and particularly recommend the Chestnut Mousse Cake and Double Layer Marble Cheesecake.

10 Cake-A-licious 
 Its cupcakes come in vibrant colours - some of them are designed to delight children with animal faces made from icing sugar. Cake-a-licious also makes fancy custom-made cakes for birthdays, Valentine's Day, religious ceremonies such as bar mitzvahs and so on.
